What causes hair loss and can hair grow back?
Hair loss in men, in typically caused by hereditary reasons, aging, DHT Dihydrotestosterone or any combination of these. In most cases, hair loss is permanent. We don’t bring dead hair follicles back to life, but actually transplant from the area where it’s abundant and move it to areas which require coverage. There are instances where some of the hair is in a dormant state or the follicles if dyeing. This hair can be revived with supplements or medication. If the follicle is completely dead, there is no reviving it. We will address the degree of your hair loss in determine the maximum number of follicles that you’ll need to transplant from the donor area to the recipient area. With people of color, fewer follicles are needed due to the texture of the hair, this means less goes further in terms of coverage. What is an FUE procedure?
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE) hair transplants can be an effective solution for people of color experiencing hair loss. This minimally invasive procedure involves harvesting individual hair follicles from donor areas, typically the back and sides of the scalp, and transplanting them to thinning or balding areas. For patients with Afro-textured hair, which tends to be curly and kinky, FUE allows surgeons to carefully extract and transplant follicles while preserving the natural curl pattern. This attention to detail helps ensure that the transplanted hair blends seamlessly with the surrounding hair, creating a natural-looking result. Additionally, FUE leaves no linear scar, which is particularly beneficial for those who prefer to wear their hair short. Is it possible to restore my original hairline?
We realize hairlines are essential reasons for wanting a hair transplant. It’s even more essential for people of color who like to have a nicely defined hairline to shape up with a liner. It’s important to have realistic expectations based on your degree of hair loss. We take your degree of hair loss, amount of donor hair and head shape into consideration when designing your new hairline. If you like, you may bring an old photo from when your hairline was to satisfaction. We’ll attempt to design it similarly. We may use a laser assisted hairline device for aiding in the design.Do hair FUE transplants really work on black people?
Despite what you’ve been told, hair transplant work with black patients and all people of color. When done with the correct techniques and punch sizes, it is possible. It’s best to work with a competent doctor who has extensive experience working with afro ethnic hair types. If a doctor or clinic is not confident, then there’s no need to take the risk. What pre-op preparations should I take?
We advise you cease using all supplements and medications associated with hair loss recovery. It’s advised to cut back on these aids at least 3 weeks prior to your procedure date. See our FUE transplant preparation.
I am not black and don’t have ethnic hair type. Are you still able to perform my transplant?
Absolutely! Don’t be turned off by the fact that we specialize in afro ethnic hair types. We work with patients of all types.
Can black women receive FUE hair restorations?
Yes, we welcome women of all ethnicities and backgrounds. Women are also perfect candidates for FUE hair transplants and can achieve beautiful results due to normally having generous amounts of donor hair. If you suffer from years from receding hair due to tight braids, alopecia and other conditions, we can help.
Will I feel any pain during the procedure?
The procedure has minimal pain due to local anesthesia being administered. If you require stronger anesthesia, it may be available. Please inquire with us.
Are you able to use hair follicles from other parts of my body?
Yes, we if you have sufficient hair on other parts of your body, such as the chest and under your chin, we may be able to use this as donor hair. Some patients do not have enough hair on donor hair on their heads to cover a desired area. Chest and beard hair are great substitutes.
Are your surgeons certified medical doctors?
Yes, we only use world-class doctors, clinics, and hospitals. Every step of the procedure is scrutinized for adherence to the highest standards and protocols.
How safe are FUE hair restorations?
FUE hair transplants are minimally invasive and carry very limited risk when carried out by a certified professional. We will perform a pre procedure test to make sure you’re not at risk of excess bleeding or clotting.
Is an FUE restoration permanent?
The procedure is permanent. A hair transplant should be accompanied by careful after care and supplements to limit further hair loss and to strengthen follicles. With a strong after care regiment, you are not likely to experience any significant loss after your procedure.
How long before I see results?
After an FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) hair transplant, the timeline for seeing results can vary from person to person. However, here's a general timeline of what you can expect:
Immediately after the procedure: The transplanted hair will be visible, but it is just the hair shafts, which will fall out within 2–3 weeks.
2–3 months: During this period, the transplanted hair will fall out, and you may notice little or no growth. This is normal and expected.
3–4 months: Around this time, the transplanted hair follicles will start to grow new hair. The growth may be thin and fine initially.
6 months: By this stage, you should notice significant growth of the transplanted hair. Around 50-60% of the new hair growth should be visible.
12 months: The full results of the hair transplant should be evident at this point. The transplanted hair will continue to grow and thicken, blending with your existing hair.
It's important to note that the final results may take up to 18 months to be fully apparent. Additionally, factors such as age, health, and the quality of the transplanted follicles can influence the growth timeline. It's crucial to follow post-operative care instructions and maintain communication with your surgeon throughout the recovery process.
What are the requirements to qualify for an FUE hair transplant?
To be a suitable candidate for a hair transplant, you should meet the following requirements:
Adequate donor hair: You must have enough healthy hair follicles in the donor area (usually the back and sides of the scalp) to be transplanted to the recipient area.
Stable hair loss: Your hair loss should have stabilized or be progressing slowly. If you are young and experiencing rapid hair loss, your surgeon may recommend waiting before undergoing a transplant.
Realistic expectations: You should have realistic expectations about the outcome of the procedure. While a hair transplant can significantly improve your hair density, it may not restore your hair to its original fullness.
Good overall health: You should be in good general health, with no underlying medical conditions that could impair healing or increase the risk of complications.
Healthy scalp: Your scalp should be free from infections, inflammation, or other skin disorders that could affect the success of the transplant.
Age: Although there is no strict age limit, most surgeons prefer patients to be over 25 years old, as younger patients may still be experiencing active hair loss.
Non-smoker: Smoking can impair healing and impact the success of the transplant. Most surgeons recommend quitting smoking at least a few weeks before and after the procedure.
Financial readiness: Hair transplants can be expensive, and they are usually not covered by insurance. You should be financially prepared for the cost of the procedure.
We will assess your individual case during a consultation to determine whether you are a suitable candidate for a hair transplant.
What is the age requirement for a hair transplant?
We expect clients to be at least 25 years an older and over 30 being ideal. This is because you might still be experiencing active hair loss, and it’s important to know the true extent and pattern of your hair loss. You wouldn’t want transplant hair to an area where it will be lost at an accelerated rate.
What is the maximum number of grafts that can be transplanted in one session with black hair?
The maximum number of grafts that can be transplanted during an FUE hair transplant for black patients varies depending on several factors, such as the patient's donor hair density, hair characteristics, and the size of the area being treated. On average, the maximum number of grafts that can be transplanted in a single FUE session for black patients ranges from 2,000 to 4,000 grafts. This is because black patients typically have curly, coarse hair with a lower hair density compared to other ethnicities, which can make extraction more challenging and time-consuming. However, in some cases, a skilled surgeon may be able to transplant up to 5,000 grafts in a single session if the patient has sufficient donor hair and can tolerate a longer procedure. It's essential to consult a qualified and experienced hair transplant surgeon who can assess your individual case and determine the optimal number of grafts for your specific needs and goals. It’s important to not overharvest. Furthermore, it’s better to have subsequent treatments rather than trying to do too much all at once. It will contribute to more desirable results.
How should I prepare for my procedure?
There are many things to consider when preparing for your procedure. Luckily, we have designed a comprehensive guide for preparing for your procedure. FUE Hair Transplant Preparation Guide
How long does the actual procedure take to complete?
The actual procedure is likely to take up to 6 hours depending on the amount of grafts. The meticulous work involved with harvesting follicles from the donor sire and then carefully transferring them to the recipient site makes the procedure a lengthy. Despite the time involved, we take measure to make sure you are in absolute comfort.
How successful are black FUE transplants? Do you guarantee results?
FUE hair transplants can be very successful for black patients when performed by a skilled and experienced surgeon. The success rate of FUE transplants in black patients is generally comparable to that of other ethnicities, with most patients achieving significant improvements in hair density and coverage. However, there are some unique challenges that can affect the success of FUE transplants in black patients. These include:
Hair characteristics: Black patients typically have curly, coarse hair that can be more difficult to extract and transplant than straight or fine hair. This can make the procedure more time-consuming and technically demanding.
Keloid scarring: Black patients have a higher risk of developing keloid scars, which are thick, raised scars that can occur after any type of skin injury, including FUE extraction. However, this risk can be minimized by using proper techniques and instruments.
Donor hair density: Some black patients may have lower donor hair density compared to other ethnicities, which can limit the number of grafts that can be transplanted in a single session.
Despite these challenges, many black patients have achieved excellent results with FUE hair transplants. The key to success is choosing a surgeon who has extensive experience working with black patients and who uses specialized techniques and instruments to minimize the risk of complications and maximize the growth of transplanted hair.
It's important to have realistic expectations and understand that individual results may vary depending on factors such as age, extent of hair loss, and overall health. Most patients will see significant improvement in hair density and coverage within 6–12 months after the procedure, with final results visible after 12–18 months.
Can I combine treatments to improve results?
Yes, depending on your stage of hair loss, you might consider having SMP, PRP AND FUE done in succession. It’s essential to give yourself enough time for healing. The procedures must also be performed in the correct sequence. Combing treatments is not a great option for every patient, but in some instances may offer you the appearance of greater density if your particular case qualifies.
Recovery & Followups
What activities can I do while recovering from a hair transplant?
In the days following your hair transplant procedure, it's important to rest and avoid strenuous activities that could impact the healing of your scalp and newly transplanted hair follicles. However, this recovery period doesn't mean you have to be bored or unproductive. Take advantage of this downtime to catch up on reading that book you've been meaning to dive into, or binge-watch a new TV series you haven't had time for. Gentle activities like sketching, knitting, or solving puzzles can keep your mind engaged without physical exertion. You could also use this time to learn a new skill like meditation, which promotes relaxation and healing. Light stretching and short walks are okay after the first few days, but listen to your body and your doctor's advice. Most of all, practice patience and self-care as your body recovers and your newly transplanted hair begins its growth journey.
When can I return to work?
When you can return to work will depend on how strenuous your work is and the exact activities involved. Work which involves lots of physical activity is not recommended for at least 1 month. Less strenuous work can be resumed immediately. Please speak with us for the best advice for your particular case.
Are FUE hair transplants noticeable with afro black hair?
The FUE technique involves harvesting individual follicular units from the donor area and transplanting them to the recipient site, which allows for precise control over graft placement and angle. This meticulous approach is especially beneficial for black patients, as it enables the surgeon to mimic the natural curl pattern and direction of African hair. The small, circular scars left by the FUE process are typically less visible in black skin compared to other skin tones, further enhancing the undetectable nature of the transplant. When the procedure is performed with a keen eye for detail and artistry, the transplanted hair blends seamlessly with the surrounding follicles, creating a virtually indistinguishable result from a natural head of hair. While the final outcome may take several months to fully manifest, a well-executed FUE transplant in a black patient can be remarkably discreet and natural-looking.
What are the aftercare requirements while recovering from my hair transplant?
If you've recently undergone a hair transplant procedure, proper aftercare is essential to achieve optimal results and prevent complications, especially for black patients. African hair types and skin require specific considerations during the recovery process. Here are some key aftercare requirements to keep in mind:
Gentle Washing
When washing your hair after the transplant, use a mild, sulfate-free shampoo specifically designed for post-surgical care. Gently lather the shampoo with your fingertips, avoiding rubbing or scratching the scalp. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Be extra cautious around the grafted area.
Moisturizing
Black skin and hair tends to be drier, so keeping the scalp moisturized is crucial. Apply a lightweight, non-greasy moisturizer or oil to the scalp and hair as directed by your surgeon. This helps prevent dryness, flaking, and irritation. Seek products with natural ingredients like shea butter, jojoba oil, or aloe vera.
Avoiding Tight Hairstyles & Shavers
Refrain from wearing tight hairstyles like braids, cornrows, or weaves for at least 3–4 weeks after the procedure. Pulling on the hair follicles can dislodge the grafts and impact growth. Opt for loose, low-manipulation styles during the recovery period.
Sun Protection
Sun exposure can cause hyperpigmentation in healing skin, which is more noticeable in darker skin tones. Wear a loose, breathable hat or scarf when outdoors. Once healed, apply a sunscreen with at least SPF 30 to the scalp when exposed to sunlight.
Following Up with Your Surgeon
Attend all scheduled follow-up appointments with your hair restoration surgeon. They will monitor your healing progress, address any concerns, and provide personalized guidance based on your unique needs and hair type. Don't hesitate to ask questions or report any unusual symptoms.
By adhering to these aftercare requirements and your surgeon's instructions, you can support the success of your hair transplant and promote healthy hair growth. Remember, recovery is a gradual process, and individual results may vary. Be patient with your progress and consistent with your aftercare routine.
What supplements are best for my hair after a transplant?
After undergoing an FUE hair transplant, black patients should focus on supporting the healing process and promoting healthy hair growth with the right supplements, products, and medications. Biotin, a B-vitamin, is crucial for the production of keratin, the protein that makes up hair. Taking a biotin supplement or using a biotin-infused product can help strengthen new hair and prevent shedding. Vitamin D is another essential nutrient for hair growth, and studies have strongly suggested that deficiency is more common in black populations. Incorporating supplements and consuming foods rich in this nutrient, like fatty fish or fortified milk, can be beneficial.
In addition to supplements, medications like Finasteride (Propecia) and Dutasteride (Avodart) can be prescribed to help maintain the results of an FUE hair transplant and slow down further hair loss. These medications work by blocking the conversion of testosterone to DHT, a hormone that contributes to hair follicle miniaturization and baldness. However, it's important to note that these medications can have potential side effects, including decreased libido and erectile dysfunction, which may be a concern for some black men who are at a higher risk for these issues. Consulting with your hair restoration surgeon and a dermatologist experienced in treating black patients can help determine if these medications are appropriate for your individual case.
When it comes to topical products, look for those specifically formulated for African hair types and post-transplant care. Gentle, sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners with ingredients like aloe vera, shea butter, and coconut oil can help soothe the scalp and keep the newly transplanted hair moisturized. A lightweight, non-greasy scalp oil or serum containing nourishing ingredients like jojoba, castor, or tea tree oil can also promote a healthy scalp environment. It's critical to avoid products with harsh chemicals, alcohol, or excessive fragrance that can irritate the delicate scalp skin. Following a consistent supplementation, medication (if prescribed), and hair care regimen tailored to your unique needs as a black patient can optimize the results of your FUE hair transplant and support the long-term health of your new hair.
What is a DHT blocker?
Dihydrotestosterone (DHT) is a hormone derived from testosterone that plays a significant role in hair loss, particularly in those with a genetic predisposition to male or female pattern baldness. In black individuals, who often have curly, coarse hair types, the impact of DHT on the hair follicles can be even more pronounced. The hormone can cause the follicles to shrink and eventually stop producing new hair, leading to thinning and baldness.
DHT blockers, such as Finasteride and Dutasteride, work by inhibiting the enzyme that converts testosterone to DHT, thus reducing its levels in the body. These medications can be effective in slowing down or even reversing hair loss in black patients when used consistently. DHT blockers are a suitable option based on individual factors like age, health status, and the extent of hair loss. In some cases, combining DHT blockers with other treatments like topical minoxidil or low-level laser therapy may provide optimal results for black patients seeking to prevent or reverse hair loss.
I’m worried about the side effects. Do natural DHT blockers exist?
While medications like Finasteride and Dutasteride are well-known for their ability to block DHT and prevent hair loss, some individuals, including black patients, may prefer to explore natural alternatives. Certain herbs and nutrients have been shown to possess DHT-blocking properties, offering a potential complementary approach to managing hair loss. Saw Palmetto, a small palm tree native to the southeastern United States, is one of the most popular natural DHT blockers. Its berries contain compounds that can inhibit the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to DHT. Stinging Nettle, a common herb, also has the ability to block DHT by binding to the same receptors in the body.
Other natural ingredients like Pygeum bark, Pumpkin Seed Oil, and Green Tea extract have demonstrated anti-androgen effects in studies, suggesting they may help combat DHT-related hair loss. Incorporating these herbs into your diet or using them in topical hair products may provide some benefits, but it's important to note that their effectiveness and safety have not been as extensively studied as pharmaceutical DHT blockers. Black patients should also be aware that some herbal supplements can interact with medications or exacerbate existing health conditions, so it's crucial to consult a healthcare professional before starting any new regimen. While natural DHT blockers may offer a gentler approach to managing hair loss, they should not be considered a substitute for proven medical treatments, especially in cases of advanced or rapidly progressing hair loss.
