How Black FUE Hair Transplants Work

Step 1: Consultation

We begin the process with an in-depth online consultation to examine the best course of action for your hair treatment.  We discuss your goals and outline the best treatment methods, the number of grafts required, the number of sessions needed, combined treatments, and hairline design.  Getting a hair transplant is a big decision, but it doesn’t have to be complicated when you have the right plan.

We will need photos and videos of your head from multiple angles.  Please see the images below for examples of how to take pictures of your head.  Your donor area should be sufficient enough to cover the balding or thinning areas.  Our experts will examine your photos and give an estimate of the amount of grafts that we can transplant.

Pre OP – Before Flight

Depending on your procedure requirements, your pre-op preparations will likely begin even before you set foot on the plane.  A hair transplantation is an operation that can be done in a short time, however, It is important to prepare yourself well before the procedure for a comfortable and fast recovery period.

Do not smoke before the operation.

Do not smoke before the operation.  Smoking can cause blood clots that can block the blood vessels, as well as inflammation in the body and premature aging of the skin.  Smoke also causes gum disease and bad breath, which is a real problem for you if you’re going to get a new head of hair!

Do not drink alcohol for 1 week before and after surgery.

You already know that drinking alcohol can increase your risk of stroke, heart attack, or other serious health problems—but did you know that it also increases your risk of bleeding during surgery?  Alcohol impairs clotting factors in your blood, meaning that you may bleed longer than normal after any kind of surgery (including black dye procedures).

Shave your hair 24 hours before the operation.

Shave your hair 24 hours before the operation.  Use clippers and not a razor, as it helps to reduce the risk of getting nicks, cuts and irritation on your scalp.

Don’t shave against the grain; shave with the grain instead.  It is best to use a men’s grooming kit because they are designed to give you a clean shave without causing any damage to your skin or hair follicles.  Also, make sure that you don’t go too close since this can cause some bumps on your head which will make it harder for doctors when performing transplantation procedure later on.

Do not use shaving cream or gel because these products contain chemicals that may irritate your skin and cause infections after surgery, leading to scars on top of already existing scars caused by previous surgeries (if any).

Do not shampoo your hair for 2 days.

You are not allowed to shampoo your hair for two days before the operation.  Use only water and do not use any conditioner or hair product at this time.  You may use a towel to dry your head after washing but do not comb or brush your hair in any way, as this will increase the chance of pulling out some of the transplants placed there during surgery.

Check to see if you have any allergies or contraindications.

If you have any allergies, check with your doctor before taking any medication.  Also, let your doctor know if you’re allergic to anesthesia because this could be a problem during the operation.  You should also tell them about all your medical conditions and medications that are being taken at the moment so that they can prescribe you the right dosage of medication during and after the operation.

If there is anything else which might affect the transplantation process, like being pregnant or having an organ transplant recently, it’s best to mention it as well

Do not use painkillers, multivitamin supplements and oils before the operation.

To ensure that you are in the best condition to undergo a hair transplant procedure, we recommend that you avoid taking painkillers, multivitamin supplements and oils before your operation.  Painkillers can cause drowsiness and dizziness, which could affect your ability to sit upright during the procedure.  Multivitamin supplements can also have this effect on you.  Lastly, oils can have a similar effect as well.

If you need to take any of these medications for any reason prior to your procedure, please consult us first so we can decide whether there are other ways for you to manage your symptoms without impacting the results.

Conclusion

It is important to prepare yourself well before the procedure for a comfortable and fast recovery period.  We have given you some suggestions that can help you in preparing for your operation.

Step 4 – Procedure

Before your procedure, it’s important to be well-rested and fed.  You may be required to take specific medication before your procedure.  We will notify you if that’s the case.  Arriving at the clinic, you will meet with our staff to sign the paperwork and pay the remainder of the procedure balance.  You will then meet with the doctor to examine and plan the exact details of the procedure.   This will include details such as:

Paperwork & Payment

Before we begin your procedure you’ll need to fill out standard legal paperwork and a medical history form.  Your remaining payment should be made at this time.  We’ll also take before photos for the record and to compare future results.

Testing

We need to perform a variety of simple tests which may include bleeding time, clotting time, APTT, blood sugar, HIV, ECG, blood sugar and others.  All the tests are routine and are performed to reduce your chances of any complications during the procedure.

Hairline Design

Your hairline design will be performed by our doctor or one of the assistant technicians.  If you have a preference for how your hairline is designed, you may bring photos from when you were younger or inspiration from someone else photo.  Please keep in mind that you may not have sufficient follicles available to give you exactly what you want and our experts may recommend a hairline which maximizes the amount of follicles available for optimal coverage.

Follicular Unit Extraction Count

The doctor and team will examine your hair density and level of baldness.  The Norwood scale is used to measure the level of baldness.  The scale ranks your type of baldness and is based on severity and areas affected.   We will examine both the donor and recipient areas.  It is crucial not to overharvest, so if you are a high degree on the Norwood scale then you might require multiple procedures to be performed.

Anesthesia

Local anesthesia will be administered to the donor extraction area and to the area where the new follicles will be inserted.  The anesthesia is injected with needles and may be slightly painful initially.  Breathe and relax as it will be over quickly.   The anesthesia will last for the entire duration of the procedure and for a bit longer.  If you feel any pain sensations you may request more to be injected.   The technicians will communicate with you throughout to ensure your comfort.

Procedure – Follicle Extraction

The technicians will carefully extract the follicles from your scalp while preserving them for later use.  Special micro punches are used based on the size and shape of your hair follicles.  Different hair types require different punch sizes.  Afro-black hair types are slightly curled under the skin so a larger punch size is typically required.

Procedure – Follicle Insertion:

The follicles are inserted into the scalp with a special precision and will be angled or combined based on the areas needed.

Recovery & Aftercare:

It’s essential to wear comfortable clothing as the procedure may take up to 4-8 hours, depending on the number of follicles being transplanted.  Local anesthesia will be administered to the vital areas before any extractions occur.  The procedure is relatively painless, but you may feel some sensations from time to time.
